The Agro-industry sector in Albania

Open Data Albania has conducted a research work on the agro-industry sector in the last years, based on data provided from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Protection.

Agro-industry is the industry that deals with agricultural products mass production.

In the last years, the number of firms in the agro-industrial sector has changed as shown in the graph:

In 2009, there were 2,081 agro-industry firms, 36 firms less than the year before. This decrease in the number of firms is associated with a decrease in the number of employees by about 657 individuals. Most of the firms in the agro-industry sector are bakeries (1,102 businesses), followed by milk production firms (342), wheat production (171), oil production (108), wine (86), meat (65), etc. The lack of tobacco production firms can be noticed since 2007.

Most of the investments in the agribusiness are made by the firms themselves, while the subsidies from the government budget have been null.

The agro-industry sector in Albania has a great development potential. Only in 2010, the government decided to subsidize the large-scale production of milk and the olive oil extra virgin production. This measure is necessary, in order for the Albanian agro-industry sector to be competitive in the market and even export its products.
