Gender ratios and tendency related to education

1 vit mė parė
Analyzing education based on gender in Albania during years 1994-2010 is truly interesting. There is a clear tendency towards education for females, especially during the recent years. In 1994, the education ratio was almost 50/50. There were about 1500 more women in schools than men, but in later years the situation changed dramatically. By 2003, the number of females in schools grew by 82%, whereas the number of males by only 22%.

Year 2003-2004 marked a remarkable turn as the pace of increase in the number of students was faster than in any previous year. This was a 21.6% increase, a record which came close to being maintained in the two following years as well. In addition to the masivization of the higher education, 2003 was a year of reversal in terms of the growth between the male and female students. This time, the growth of male students exceed that of female students, 23% vs 20%. This trend grows even further in the next two years, 24% vs 16%, and 22% vs 13%. Despite these changes, the number of females in school is still higher than the number of males. In 2009-2010 there were about 12,000 more females than males attending universities.
The data becomes even more interesting if we look at the population for ages 15-24 .

Since 2005, the number of males has been higher than the number of females for this age group. This explains why the growth of male students is higher than that of female students (since 2003). On the other hand the fact that after 2005, the number of female students is substantially higher, despite the population growth pointing on the opposite direction, shows that education has been a higher priority for females.
