External Debt of the Republic of Kosovo in 2013

Open Data Albania has carried out a research on the External Debt of the Republic of Kosovo as an important part of the indicators of the Public Debt. Public debt, which is issued in the country and held by non-residents is called external debt. The External debt consists mainly in bilateral or multilateral financing agreements with international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, International Development Association, etc. Data for the conduct of this research were obtained from the database of the Central Bank of Kosovo.

In 2013 Kosovo marks a positive net balance of external debt of 1.9 billion euros, which means that the external sector debt to the domestic economy (3.5 billion euros) is higher than the debt of Kosovo's economy to the external sector (1.6 billion euros).

In the 2007-2013 time frame Gross External Debt in Kosovo has been increasing. From 521 million euros in 2007, the value appears to have reached 1.6 billion euros seven years later.

Most of Kosovo's external debt consists of intercompany loans. Foreign companies operating in Kosovo owe to the external sector 672.6 million euros, or 42% of total external debt. With significant participation in Kosovo's external debt are also other sectors (EUR 329.7 million or 21% of external debt).

Government external debt marks a value of 321.8 million euros and it represents 20% of the gross external debt. The stock of gross external debt of the banking system in 2013 was 208.1 million euros or 13% of external debt. With the lowest share in total external debt is the Central Bank (62.1 million or 4% of external debt).

Main creditor of gross external debt of the Republic of Kosovo is the World Bank with a value of 216 million euros, of which 203.7 million euros financed by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and 12.4 million euros from International Development Association (IDA). Another important creditor is the International Monetary Fund with a value of 167.6 million euros.
